Introduction

The OSHL has adopted several league specific rules to support our overall goals and player safety. The rules may be amended from time to time by the executive in accordance with the provisions in the OSHL Constitution.

No Red Line for Offside or Icing

As is done in the NHL, there is no red line for offside, allowing for two line passes for those who can execute that play. In addition, there is no redline for icing, meaning that any shot into the opponent’s zone that is made in the neutral zone is not offside.

Running Time

Games are one period (43 minutes) of running time. The clock does not stop when the whistle blows. The exception to this rule is if the game is considered close (1 or 2 goal spread), stop time occurs in the last 2 minutes of the game.

Penalties

Minor penalties are 3 minutes of running time. If a player takes a third minor penalty in the same game they are out for the remainder of the game.

No Slap Shots

In the interests of preventing injuries, slap shots (or action of an intent to make a slap shot) are not permitted. A slap shot is defined as any shot where the players stick is raised above his knee. This includes both offensive shots at the net and defensive clearing shots around the boards. If the referee deems a shot to be a slap shot, the play is whistled dead and there is a face off in the offending team's end.

Mandatory Visors

At least a half visor is required to play in the league. Full face protection is strongly recommended. While we make every effort to keep the sticks down, accidents can happen. If you do not have at least a half visor, you will not be allowed on the ice.
